Routine Appointments
Highgate Group Practice operates an appointment system to see both the doctors and the nurses. Each appointment is 12 minutes long and is for one problem only. Appointments can be booked with our doctors, nurses and HCA up to 1 week in advance and are released every day at 09:30am (effective from 24th April 2023)
Please note:
- Registered patients aged 16 – 75 who have not been seen for three years are encouraged to request a consultation.
- Registered patients aged over 75 years who have not been seen in the previous 12 months are encouraged to request a consultation. (If you are unable to attend the surgery for these checks because of your medical condition, a home visit may be arranged.)

Emergency Appointments
There is a duty doctor surgery in the morning and the evening each day for patients with medical problems which must be seen on the same day. Each appointment is for ten minutes and is for the immediate problem only and not for requesting results or repeat prescriptions. Morning appointments are released at 8.00am and afternoon appointments are released at 1:00pm.
Which Doctor?
The doctors prefer to see their own patients, subject to availability, as they do like to get to know them. We, therefore, encourage you to see the same doctor for the same problem if possible but this cannot occur if is an emergency appointment.
Delays
Sometimes problems take longer to sort out than expected or a doctor may be called out on an emergency. We will make every effort to keep you informed of delays and we appreciate your patience and understanding as this situation can be stressful for all concerned.
Late Arrival
If you arrive more than 10 minutes late for an appointment the receptionists will ask the reason and let the doctor know. You may be seen, asked to wait until the end of surgery or to re-book your appointment as requested by your doctor.
Appointment DNAs – Did not attend
Due to an increase in the number of wasted appointments through patients failing to attend without informing the surgery, it has become necessary to implement the following policy: HGP DNA policy. If you fail to attend for 3 appointments you may be removed from this practice list and have to find an alternative doctor.
If you cannot attend your appointments for any reason please let us know as soon as possible, we can then offer the appointment to someone else.
Home Visits
A home visit request for a terminally ill patient or bedbound patient should be made before 10.00 am unless an emergency arises later in the day.
The Receptionist will need as much information as possible to help the Doctor prioritize requests. A decision to visit remains at the Doctor’s discretion and is based on medical necessity. These visits are scheduled at the end of the doctor’s shift, which may be in the late afternoon. Please note that a doctor can see at least three patients in the surgery in the time it takes to make a home visit.
